Yahoo News - Hopes that Iceland could agree with Britain and the Netherlands over the terms of repaying $5.7 billion owed to the two countries collapsed Thursday, as officials said talks in London ended without a final resolution. It is estimated the repayments will cost Iceland the equivalent of $60,000 per family.

Official unemployment climbed a full percentage point in Russia during the month of January and now stands at 9.2 percent. Despite government claims that the recession is over, the state statistics agency Rosstat reported that a further 630,000 people lost their jobs last month. Economists, using the methods employed by the International Labour Organisation, say the total number of jobless is close to 6.8 million.

A solution to Macedonia’s name dispute with Greece should be found in the coming four months, so as to start EU accession negotiations under the Spanish EU presidency, enlargement commissioner Stefan Fuele said during his visit to Skopje on Friday (19 February).

WHEN the Turkish government signed a deal with Armenia last October, it looked like a clear achievement for its policy of “zero problems” with its neighbours. Now Turkey is throwing a fresh tantrum. The Armenian constitutional court recently approved the agreement on the grounds that it satisfied the founding principles of the state, which include seeking worldwide recognition of the 1915 tragedy as genocide.

se passe loin d’ici et qui coute la vie d’hommes est de plus en plus impossible. C’est ce qui vient de coûter le pouvoir au gouvernement de coalition néerlandais. D’autres gouvernements pourraient suivre - même le gouvernement national est sous pression.
Jan Peter Balkenende ist mit seiner Koalition am Thema Afghanistan gescheitert. Die Regierungen des Briten Gordon Brown und seines spanischen Kollegen Zapatero sind ebenfalls in Gefahr. Den Wählern einen Anti-Terror-Einsatz zu verkaufen, der weit weg stattfindet und Menschenleben kostet, ist zunehmend unmöglich. Das hat die niederländische Koalition jetzt die Macht gekostet. Weitere europäische Regierungen könnten folgen – auch die Bundesregierung steht unter Druck.
