NM - EDITO

[EU] Masters and servant

THE PRAGUE POST - For a country nearly 20 years removed from Soviet domination, the Czech Republic doesn’t always act like a sovereign and independent state — at least when it comes to its relationship with my country, Big Brother across the Atlantic. Indeed, at times it seems that Czechs have only exchanged one set of overseers for another. THE PRAGUE POST

[EU] Eurofunding Microsoft?

SOFIA ECHO - In the same week in which Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev placed the first pre-emptive strikes against a possibly negative report from the European Commission over the lack of progress in Bulgaria’s fight against organised crime and alleged abuse of European Union funding, other parts of the Government appear to be finding innovative and creative uses for EU funds. >>> SOFIA ECHO

A huge price paid for election that never was

GUARDIAN - From then on the disastrous public debate about the election plans was under way. The election that never was - finally scrapped on a humiliating Saturday in early October - still haunts the prime minister. It has decisively shaped the media prism through which he is seen, led to a falling out within the Brown camp itself, and forced a reorganisation within No 10. GUARDIAN

[EU] The Danube Delta, a challenge

NINE O’CLOCK.RO - The Danube is Europe’s large river, uniting a continent with its waters but also with its legendary beauties and tourism potential. Basically put, the Danube was the first to consecrate Europe’s unity. That is why most of the historical treaties of alliance, of cooperation, the war declarations or the peace conferences in Europe have referred to the Danube’s status as to an essential goal. Scrap the cap - It’s time to overhaul European agricultural policy

PRAGUE POST - 04/06 - On May 20, the European Union announced proposals to reform its Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The EU agriculture minister said that Europe should provide its farmers with a safety net, not an easy chair. While these proposals are a welcome step in the right direction, they should go further in abolishing the market-distorting incentives of CAP. - PRAGUE POST - 04/06
