During the last weeks the possible bombing of Iran through Israel has been extensively discussed in the English-speaking Internet (i.e. mainly in the US and in Israel). In the center of this discussion is the September-issue of the magazine “The Atlantic”, which contains an analysis titled “The Point of No Return” written by Jeffrey Goldberg and an organized debate on the subject through contributions by invited writers and through a big debate with the whole Internet-readership. This, of course, has sparked more debates and articles; Whereas many of the related articles are clouded by speculations and fears and in the worst case are mere propaganda, Goldberg’s article really offers original work and insights into the motivations of the Israeli leadership. - NEWROPMAG

Nur 43 Prozent der Europäer nahmen 2009 an der Europawahl teil. Das war der niedrigste Wert, seit die Europaabgeordneten 1979 erstmals direkt vom Volk gewählt wurden. Die schwache Wahlbeteiligung dient Gegnern der EU als Argument für die fehlende demokratische Berechtigung der Union. Um dem entgegenzuwirken, hat sich Spaniens früherer Ministerpräsident Felipe González am Montag ausdrücklich dafür ausgesprochen, dass der Präsident der Europäischen Kommission künftig direkt vom Volk gewählt werden soll. - DIE PRESSE

Why not September 2010? he Americans say the time is right. The time may be right for the Obama administration, though it’s not clear why, but it is hardly right for the parties involved. Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, think Iran is a more urgent priority. They believe the Palestinian problem can wait a little longer, and they see no Palestinian leaders they can make deals with. The Palestinian Authority and its president, Mahmoud Abbas, were dragged to these talks kicking and screaming, and they don’t seem to intend to give an inch. They think Netanyahu doesn’t really mean business, and they have a hard time dealing with criticism from Hamas, Syria, and other regional belligerents. - SLATE

Personne ne croit à la réussite des pourparlers directs entre Israéliens et Palestiniens. En quoi septembre 2010 sera-t-il différent? Les Américains disent que le moment est propice. Peut-être l’est-il pour l’administration Obama (même si l’on a du mal à comprendre pourquoi), mais les autres partis sont sans doute loin d’être de cet avis. Israël et son premier ministre, Benjamin Netanyahou, estiment que l’Iran est une priorité autrement plus urgente, et que le problème palestinien peut attendre; par ailleurs, ils ne perçoivent aucun interlocuteur sérieux côté palestinien. L’Autorité palestinienne et son président, Mahmoud Abbas, ont été traînés à la table des négociations à leur corps défendant; ils semblent peu disposés à céder le moindre pouce de terrain. Netanyahou n’a, selon eux, pas la moindre intention de négocier, et il leur faut composer avec les critiques du Hamas, de la Syrie et d’autres acteurs régionaux – ce qui n’est pas chose aisée. - SLATE

A l’heure où les déclarations de Brice Hortefeux sur la nationalité, les Roms, la délinquance, etc (sans compter sa condamnation pour injure raciale) ont suscité colère et réprobation de l’opposition et de certains politiques de droite, la volonté affichée du ministre de l’Intérieur de devenir maire de Vichy (il le dit «sans détour») en 2014 devrait faire réagir. Sie setzen sie auf wählbare Listenplätze und buhlen um ihre Stimmen… Auch in sogenannten Ethnomedien sind die meisten Parteien präsent. Das sind Zeitungen, Zeitschriften oder auch TV-Stationen, die in den Sprachen der einzelnen Communitys gehalten sind und einen wichtigen Integrationsbeitrag leisten können: Yeni Hareket etwa erscheint auf Türkisch, Kosmo auf Serbisch, Kroatisch und auf Bosnisch und Vesti ebenfalls auf Serbisch. - KURIER

Für den Chef der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO), Pascal Lamy, wird Österreich in der Europäischen Union als “mit seiner Kapazität als europäische Schnittstelle”, als “Bindeglied zwischen Ost und West”, gebraucht, und könnte “einen noch besseren Job erledigen” . Denn: “Österreich soll in der EU eine Koalition kleinerer Länder anführen” , sagt Lamy. Mit so einer Koalition könne es gelingen, dass “nicht immer nur die Großen entscheiden”. - DER STANDARD

“Ich klage die Regierung, weil es für die Öffentlichkeit wichtig ist zu wissen, dass das Department of Homeland Security die Europäische Union angelogen hat” schrieb Edward Hasbrouck in einer Aussendung zu seiner Klage. “Die Europäer sollten sich also nicht auf ihre Behörden verlassen, sondern selbst aktiv werden und Beschwerden einlegen. Die gesamte PNR-Infrastruktur ist ein einziger flagranter Verstoß gegen alle europäischen Datenschutzprinzipien”, so Hasbrouck. - ORF
