Image(Editorial) - You think the Czech government is approved by the Parliament and game is over? No, it seems not to be the case. Czech politicians have a strong and highly developed sense of humour.

Have a look for instance at the last session of the Czech Parliament last Friday (February 2, 2007): The Chair of the session called members of the Czech government to come and participate in the debates. Usually it is their obligation – but you have Friday afternoon! Summer houses are waiting not only in Summer but also during the winter!  Spring is on the threshold, it’s time to cut the fruit trees and you call me to work in the organisation people do not trust? According the last nationwide opinion poll only 26 per cent of the Czech citizens trust the Czech Parliament! So why to come and dispute with those non trustful MPs!

ImageThat is why only the Prime minister came and expressed his opinion by means of non verbal communication to everybody (see picture). Comedy or tragedy? Just the real Czech policy!!

Do you think that’s it? Well, you might know, recently Mrs. Merkel, the German Councillor visited the Czech Republic to hear something new and worthwhile from the Czech politicians. She thought – no surprise could happen. The Czech politicians (first of all the famous Euro-sceptic Vaclav Klaus) might just repeat they are not interested in any Constitution – neither European nor Czech. But surprise occurred – she has heard: “Merkelova is not a partner for me”. Who said it? The new Euro-Minister Mr. Alexandr Vondra, former dissident, friend of Vaclav Havel and former Ambassador in the USA.

Wow!

What is the Czech government thinking about Europe? What would they like to do here?
Nobody knows. We have two assignees to talk about the Constitution in Europe, the former Minister of Defense Mr. Sedivy and the MEP Mr. Zahradil. Mr Zahradil was the former member of the European Convent preparing the Constitutional Treaty. He left the hall when the Convent voted. This way he expressed his protest against the Constitution. He seems to prefer using scissors or better a chopper to amend the document.

Whom they represent?
Nobody knows – the coalition partners protested against such representatives: the Greens and Christian-democrats are pro European and government had not approved their designation. Mr Topolanek (Prime Minister of Czech Republik) is a strong guy however. He answered a simple way – they are representing the Czech Republic because I DECIDED.

Funny? I am not sure….
