Eurobonds: Nein, danke???

Christos Mouzeviris

At last, with the crisis in Europe and the eurozone reaching a critical turning point, two of Europe’s leaders Mr. Sarkozy and Mrs. Merkel decided to do something about it. But why just the two of them took such important decisions? And some long delayed decisions too?

A European Hollywood?

Christos Mouzeviris

As a film fan I can’t help noticing one thing: the lack of European productions that hit our screens, the lack of funds that we dedicate towards making big block buster movies and of course promoting them in Europe and beyond. Our cinemas are flooded by mainly American productions and I can’t say that I am happy with that. But imagine if there was a company that produced European movies in Europe. A company that would finance movies from all European countries, many different directors and producers to be able to make films. Filmed in many different European regions in all European languages, any language the producers wanted, depending the country they were coming from, or the language they just fancied! …

So, this is how it works in Capitalism, isn’t it?

Christos Mouzeviris

Recently when Ireland and Greece were stricken by the economic crisis, everyone tried to understand how both nations ended up in this mess. Especially in Ireland that they used to be one of the best examples and success stories of Europe. They needed answers, someone to take responsibility and perhaps someone to blame. So what did their Governments do? They told their citizens that everyone is to blame, everybody has responsibility for the mess…

Greece for sale…

Christos Mouzeviris

Coming back from my summer holidays in Greece, I felt that I had to write about the situation that the ordinary people of this country are going through; give an inside view and opinion on the events and add to what the media of Europe and the world are portraying of the situation.

…The easy option! Suspend the Schengen! Bravo!

Christos Mouzeviris

What a lovely act of unity, an inspirational example of Europe and its leaders acting in solidarity when dealing with difficult issues! What have we been witnessing for the past few weeks, when the crisis hit north Africans took to the boats to enter Europe, was the (still) selfish and nationalist reaction of each E.U. state. Trying to protect their own interests instead of seeing the problem as a European one, they took their time and lots of debate to find a solution to a common problem, only to come to a decision that protects national interests first.

Can small European countries like Greece and Ireland, become Europe’s Green Industries?

Christos Mouzeviris

With the recent recession and crisis in EU and the Euro-zone, the two hardest hit members that were forced to get a bail out from the IMF, Greece and Ireland are pondering on solutions and reforms for their economies. Both must please their population that demands such humiliating incident never to happen again. Apart the fact that they need to push for enough reforms that the IMF demands to secure the loan deal, they really must create a plan for the future to make sure that their economies are up to date and fully functioning. …

How corruption in Greece works…

Christos Mouzeviris

With the recent developments in Greece, the global media rushed in condemning the country painting their own picture of the situation in Greece. Apart the fact that we must examine the interests and the nationality of the journalists who wrote about Greece, I will also add that there is a smear campaign by the predominantly “AngloAmerican” media for all southern European states (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain…). Make no mistake, there is corruption in Greece…

Time for pan-European political parties and exchange of political ideas?

Christos Mouzeviris

I would love to have a Swede, a German or a Dane as Mayor of my home town Thessaloniki in Greece. The city has so many potentials, but our national politicians follow the same circle of policies that date back to the disastrous civil war. Enough!! Bring in European politicians to see and exploit those potentials, and give the people of Thessaloniki and Greece the wealth and stability that they deserve….

How to integrate 27 strangers? Education and integration in EU

Christos Mouzeviris

The European project, as many call it, started after the second World War, and it has progressed today in the form of EU. One of its main goals and visions is the European integration, and the creation of one Europe to be invented by its citizens. While there are many who oppose to a “federal” project a nation state approach, the idea in general has lost its support among the European population. Unemployment, economic crisis, bad press and the constant division between the European states they create, and of course the reluctance of our national political elites to let go of the power over us they’ve been holding for decades, centuries even, have seriously damaged the orientation and the purpose of this cause. It lacks a backbone, the vision the ambition.

Harmonization of Salaries and Pensions in the Eurozone!

Christos Mouzeviris

I originally come from one country of the Eurozone and I am living in another! My family still lives in Greece, while I am making my living in Ireland. Every time I visit home and meet up with friends and family we discuss how are we getting on with our jobs, our lives and how do we make things meet. One thing that comes to my attention is how most things cost the same in the Eurozone. Of course you will say, that is one of the main reasons we do have the euro and one of its benefits. Yes, but then why our salaries are so different?
