► The stability of Euroland can not depend on national elections and institutions
Newropeans links the call for democracy with a clear commitment to the Euro
The outcome of the Italian elections has shown once more that in order to be successful in the long run Euroland needs its own elections and institutions. The European citizens’ movement Newropeans therefore demands once again that Euroland receives a democratically elected parliament of its own, which elects and controls a Euroland government. The responsibility for the single currency then would be at a common structure and so independent from national turbulences.
With a parliament (or a chamber of parliament) and a government of its own Euroland will be capable of acting and thus be able to ensure effectively the interests of the citizens at home and abroad. A common political decision-making process of Euroland will also cause that the interests of all the member states will be considered and the measures to combat the crisis and its consequences will be better balanced as it is today.
For as it has been shown rigorous forced saving alone does not lead out of the crisis. It finally strangles any economic activity. Newropeans therefore also rejects the cuts in the EU budget recently agreed by the European Council. If financial cuts are made, then only to the salaries of bureaucrats, not to the programmes. And the 6 billion Euros provided by the EU on February 28th for the Youth Employment Initiative should be translated by the Member States into concrete action by now!
While until 2009 the elections of the European Parliament had gone to rack and ruin of national politics, the people in Euroland now can make the contrary experience: National elections in Italy affect “their Euro”, the whole of Euroland but the other European citizens have had nothing to say. As much as one can understand the rage of the Italian citizens – it is directed primarily against their own national political class.
As Franck Biancheri, founder and honorary president of Newropeans, had pointed out very clearly about ten years ago: In case there won’t be a democratization of EU left wing and right wing populism will rise as well as nationalist attitudes. This is the consequence of the fact that citizens have lost the access to big politics about three decades ago. In 2005 Newropeans was founded in order to link democracy and European integration. This is the movement Euroland needs now.
