Nobel Peace Prize for EU: Sustainable peace needs democracy!
The committee of the Nobel Prize for Peace in Oslo has awarded the European Union for creating and maintaining peace in Europe now for more than five decades. After the bloodshed during the first half of the last century, the European unification and integration have turned out to be an outstanding historical success. With this achievement of peace, the EU sets an example for other regions in the world whether nearby or far away.
This is why the European citizens movement Newropeans will keep striving for its aim; not mere establishment of peace but to its preservation, by fighting for democratization of European level governance. Therefore, since 2011 Newropeans has zoomed in on the participation of citizens in Euroland. In the 17 member states that adopted the single currency, integration has since then progressed spectacularly. Euroland integration is the most pervasive in impacting the lives of its citizens. However, citizens are increasingly left behind without a say in the governance of their Euroland.
Nowadays this lack of influence and democratic control in Euroland has created a situation far away from peace. In the southern member states the tight austerity policy has led to social protests, violent outbreaks, and a youth without perspective on a future. Instead of blaming those who have created the disastrous crisis – national politicians, European bureaucrats and the global players of the financial markets old nationalist clichés and conflicts are on the rise again. This path governance without the citizens – will not lead to a peaceful future.
The primary weakness of Euroland is the absence of a democratically controlled Euroland economic government. This lack of democracy disables the political input of the people (whether from northern or southern member states) and secondly, stronger political will-building, which is a precondition for political stability and the capacity to act. A sustainable solution of Eurolands challenges can be established only by the citizens themselves fighting for their single currency and their common interests in Euroland.
But also in another respect, the Nobel Prize is an obligation: In order to deserve in the future its Nobel Peace Prize, the EU needs to build and implement a defense and security policy which will serve the future multipolar global peace balance rather than an unilateralist pro-western/US agenda. In its programme Newropeans already has made a few fresh and appealing proposals concering International Politics of the EU under democratic control”.
