The bloody dissolution of the Former Yugoslavia, instigated and carried out by Serbia and Montenegro under the than President of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic's rule, has been billed to Serbia - the former republics got the status of states and finally independence of Kosovo. This was also a new date in yet another instability in the Western Balkans, but one that would only be afforded to Serbia, Kosovo and would eventually spill over to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kosovo was going to be independent whether instability was looming or not, whether Serbia and Russia wanted it or not. It would be impossible that any country or a province attacked by its closest neighbour would want to stay in the shadow of that country. Kosovo with its strong lobby in the United States fought and won the support announcing its independence on 17th February despite an objection of most orthodox countries Serbia receives support from. Serbia's bloody wars of the 1990s claimed 150,000 to 200,000 lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina through genocide and displaced a million people worldwide, and in Croatia 10,000 were killed. Taking a short break in 1996 only to strike again in 1999 in Kosovo where Serb forces killed, and burned villages of ethnic Albanian population. Kosovo became UN Resolution 1244 governed and protected by the West. Upon realisation that Kosovo will be lost, Serbia began to mix into politics of Bosnia and Herzegovina encouraging the Serbs in Republika Srpska (RS), an entity of Bosnia created from genocide, to upraise and threaten to claim its independences from Bosnia. However, RS exists as long as the Dayton Peace Agreement signed to stop the war in Bosnia does, any talk of autonomy from Bosnia has been strongly objected but the US and Bosnia's High Representative Miroslav Lajcak. And yet Serbia's Foreign Minister, Vuk Jeremic, calls the recognition of Kosovo as an independent state, an illegal act and a historical injustice. Serbia it seems is very quick to forget own breaching of international law and the crimes it committed in the Western Balkans and feels the world is against them. This was not always the case as the 1990s wars saw. Much of the EU countries openly supported Serbia starting from France, Italy, and Spain all the way to Romania and Greece, but its biggest ally remains Russia, who through Serbia is at war with the US. However, the EU still does not speak with one voice, nor will it ever. EU's foreign policy has seen a great support for Serbia years gone, this year while that voice has decreased it is still present in Serbia's backyard. Not all the EU countries recognised Kosovo's independence, much of the EU's foreign policy has been in trouble, offering Serbia an interim agreement as opposed to Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) which would see them with liberalised visa restrictions, student exchange and free trade, but no SAA as long as Serbia's heroes Radovan Karadzic and General Ratko Mladic, the two most wanted war criminals, are at large. Serbia it seems will never learn to put its own house in order. Since Kosovo's Independence, Belgrade's thugs burned and looted US Embassy followed by the embassies of European countries. Mike McConnell, US Director of National Intelligence testifying before Senate Committee said they had intelligence reports proving that Serbian government ordered its police to not react and to allow the Serbs to burn and loot embassies. Followed to this, Russian anchor speaking on Russian television called for assassination of Serbian President Boris Tadic for loss of Kosovo, in the same style as its late Prime Minister Zoran Dzindzic was assassinated in 2003. Serbia seems to still be living in the bubble of belief that they are invincible. Russia's support for Serbia comes with an interest, one being Serbia's gasline the other the constant difference between Russia and the US, so Russia is using Serbia to get to the US. Serbs, however feel themselves special that mother Russia has their back. If only Tito could wake up for a few minutes to see what had happened to his Yugoslavia, he would have had a heart attack and died all over again. Tito, who fought against Russia's desire to place its army on the Adriatic coast, would be bewildered to see the Nightmare in the Balkans. But the start of all the hell goes back to post- Tito days, when Kosovo Albanians in 1989 marched for their independence from Serbia wearing Tito's picture on their groins. Their desire for independence sparked the Serb nationalism resulting in bloody wars of the Western Balkan. What the West seems to fail to understand is that their interest whatever they may be is going to help Serbia destabilise the Western Balkans, whether that be through direct or indirect support for Kosovo or Serbia. Serbia's nationalists and paramilitaries have been purching on the border between Serbia and Kosovo waiting to get in, and while there will not be any war, there most certainly will not be any peace either. Serbia will not give up on the territory that is historically theirs, a territory that is a host to all the Serb monasteries, the root of its religion, it's like Israel giving up on Jerusalem. While Kosovo deserves its Independence, the repercussions will be greater, the instability is present in the Western Balkans most especially those that are now spilling over to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and where the RS is allowed to get away with murder with impunity. America needs to learn that it cannot police the world, the West needs to take a history lesson in the Western Balkans and realise what may work in the West will never work in countries of the Former Communist Yugoslavia, especially when those countries have history of wars. EU needs to stop negotiating with RS and satisfying the pathetic requests from singer under a cattle fair tent, Milorad Dodik, current Prime Minister of the RS, and instead implement harsher rules. What Bosnjak and Croat federation of Bosnia want, RS opposes. Bosnjak and Croat federation want for a better life within the borders of the EU, RS influenced by Belgrade wants to be independent and develop its own rules. When entering RS, border signs says "Welcome to Republika Srpska" however, it does not mention anything about Bosnia under which borders RS exists. Bosnian did not attack Serbia nor did it commit worst crimes of humanity on Serbian territory like Serbia did to Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. So for losing Kosovo, Serbia wants RS to join Serbia, the two provinces which have nothing to do with one another. Dodik and Serbia's Prime Minister Voislav Kostunica, need to forget Russia's support because it will not be Russians feeding them as the Russian can't feed themselves either. Dodik and Kostunica need to realise the only way for the survival is to work towards joining the opportunity that is the EU machine. Greater Serbia is a dream created by Milosevic, who thought he would carve Yugoslavia according to how he saw it fit for the Serbs, but the time of the Empires is long over and Serbia has not got the means nor power to rule the Western Balkans like Tito did. 11/03/2008 - Hasan Serbia’s Lost Empires - I was listening the same battle cries as itemized by “R.“ when Serbia's paramilitary hordes, trained and armed by the government of Serbia, crossed the Bosnia frontier in April 1992 to orgy on innocent and unarmed Bosnian civilian and “liberating“ one after another places and killing non-Serbs and even some of the Serbs who refused to participate in their murderous conviviality. It was a foray instigated by Mr. Milosevic’s policy of a greater Serbia where there would be no place for non-Serbs. All other Serbs’ theories of a plot by the West are nothing but stark lies.Comparison by “Sammyz” of Kosovo and Republic of Srpska is utterly a nonsense. While Kosovo was annexed during the Balkan war in 1912, it has never de jure was a part of Serbia, but a part of Yugoslavia and as such was an autonomous province. Republic of Srpska had never existed as anyone’s part but was created on genocide in 1995 by those who were taking part of Serbia during its aggression on Bosnia in 1992. Serbia now insists on respect of the international law forgetting the near past when it was violating all possible human and international laws. Now America and the West are to be blamed for the genocide and atrocities committed by the Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo. I only wonder whether the EU is aware of what adder it is calling to joint it. I am afraid it will destabilize even the EU, as it is a destabilizing factor on the Balkans. Wait and see. 11/03/2008 - Teslina Tesla Before getting concerned about this very odd article, remember Nadina Roncevic is not a commentator but a paid advisor to the Albanian Kosovar PM, and a long-time proponent of their cause. This means her striking descriptions of the Serb side should be regarded as party political broadcasts, with all the credibility that carries.Hence perhaps invoking a grab-bag of increasingly distant Serb misdeeds while ignoring the genuine key - and current -issue, the woeful mistreatment of Serb and other minorities in Kosovo by her side. As an American citizen that tries to pay close attention to world events, and gets information from as many disparate sources as possible, I have come up with only one reliable FACT: ...that ANYTHING you hear about what's going on in the former Yugoslavia,... ...consists of a TINY kernel of truth, wrapped in a BIG lie, wrapped in an agenda, wrapped in an obfuscation, wrapped in a proxy. In other words, there is just no way to really arrive at any semblance of an understanding of what's really going on, and the only thing you can definitively hold close is that whatever the face value APPEARS to be, the underlying truth isn't even a red-headed stepchild of that face value. 11/03/2008 - Belinda at Devoted Consultancy Just a quick response to this article written by Nadina who I would say is either a Croat or Bosnian Muslim. You seem not to know your history about the former Yugoslavia & make a personal attack on Serbia & its people. Your journalism is to be laughed at and was second rate. Blame the US & the western countries who planned the break- up of the old Yugoslavia, notably Germany, who killed millions of Serbs during WW2. How can anybody blame Serbia for reacting to losing Kosovo to the Albanians, would any country just accept losing their territory. Lets now grant independence to the Republica Sprska in Bosnia. 11/03/2008 - Cygnus Why is that if any population (other than Serbian people) in the Balkans seeks 'self-determination' it is to be championed and endorsed by all, but if Serbian people seek that same right, it as Ms. Roncevic describes, should be treated 'harshly'. This kind of double standard likely won't be tolerated by Serbian people and nor do I think it should. Secondly, I think the author should be more responsible with the numbers she uses to characterize the war. Using exagerrated numbers and inflammatory rhetoric to inspire and incite hatred against Serbian people does not serve the Balkans well. As published by the ICTY itself, 102000 casualties resulted from the recent wars in the Balkans, 30% of those victims were Serbian and there was fighting between Muslim 'Bosniaks' and Croats as well as interfighting amongst the 'Bosniaks'. This has been know for quite some time yet the author still perpetuates the myth that 150-200 thousand people were killed by Serbs. Thirdly, if a Bosnian of Croat descent could speak for themselves, I seriously doubt they would concur that are steadfastly in agreement with how the Bosnian Muslims have been governing. They for the most part fell like they have been overlooked and even been discriminated against by the Bosnian Muslim government. Far from the unity that you espouse that they seek, many feel like they need more autonomy from the central government. If the Croats who are supposed allies of the Bosnian Muslims can't live within in the Bosnian state without being discrimated against, what chance do regular Serbian people have at living a normal life in Bosnia? 11/03/2008 - Vladimir Grubetic After reading the article , “Serbia’s Lost Empires” the journalist who wrote it Nadina Roncevic must either be a Croat or Bosnian Muslim who has made a personal attack on Serbia & Serbian people. Get your facts right first before you start making a personal attack of a country & its people. 11/03/2008 - Rocco Nadina, you are completely wrong. The U.S. had planned to dismember Yugoslavia long before Milosevic. They waited until Tito died, so that his control over the country would not interfere with their plans. Germany couldn't wait to get revenge on the Serbs for losing to them their battles of World War II. The Albanian political leaders of Kosovo are Islamo-Fascists, who plan on taking more land away from the Serbs. It was the American backed Bosnians who attacked the Yugoslav army first. It was the German backed Croatian fascists who attacked Yugoslav forces. Milosevic was trying to keep Yugoslavia together, while NATO, mainly led by the U.S. and Germany were trying to break it up. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in the Balkans because of the planning of Richard Holbrooke and Madelaine Albright...and other villians. Their evil and their egos will lead to a new world war. R. 10/03/2008 - John Mutic Hi Nadina, You have a lovely muslim name, your whole article was based on lies and and more fabricated lies. Perhaps you should right how many times Alija Izetbegovic met wih Bin Laden in Sarajevo. 10/03/2008 - sammyz nadina, you speak many truths but you must understand that sovreign land is what it is .the un is still the ultimate legal machine . which the usa seems to diregaed whenever it needs to procure its interests ie (arming KLA and bosnia covertly of course well what about sadam hussain and the taliban who were then called muhajadeen) of course russia has an agenda and why shouldnt they .the atrocities committed by israel daily are never crititised by the west ask yourself why . If RS wants to align with serbia whats wrong with that nothing if you follow your own rules question to you why does the usa need to have control in the various parts of the world. because economically its a spent force .its trying to destabalise the eu and control the flow of oil around the world the the russia of today is far stronger than the ussr was .personally i would like to see serbia in the eu with or without kosovo. and all the other fyr,s in eu only then can all the bloodshed of history old and new be put to bed and resigned to history once and for all .as for mladic and karadzic how can you be sure its wuithin serbia,s power to arrest them .after all osama bin laden is still at large or at least the usa wants us to think he is. |
