12/02/2008 (Communiqué): Newropeans supports the petition 'No to Tony Blair as President of the European Union' - If the Lisbon Treaty enters into force, the future EU President will be nominated in an intransparent and undemocratic way, namely a horse-trading process between the heads of state and government.

  • Newropeans invites all its members and supporters to sign the petition 'No to Tony Blair as President of the European Union - www.stopblair.eu - which has been initiated by The European Tribune.

Newropeans believes that it is a very healthy sign for European democracy that European citizens feel the need to express their opinions on the choices of future key EU leaders.

At the same time, we fully agree to the criticims that the petition's initiators express about Tony Blair. He in no way reflects European values and does not embody the European spirit.  The role of the future president is to drive European policies and represent the EU in the world.
Blair's past political career on various occasions put him into straight opposition of European values. It gives him no legitimacy to take this prominent position.

If the Lisbon Treaty enters into force, the future EU President will be nominated in an intransparent and undemocratic way, namely a horse-trading process between the heads of state and government.
  • In its electoral programme for the European Elections of June 2009, Newropeans makes new suggestions how to select the future political leader of the EU and how the EU executive can be nominated in a way that it enjoys full democratic legitimacy among the European citizens and is capable of efficient and transparent trans-European action.
  • Newropeans furthermore wants the European executive to be fully accountable for all of its activities, which will not be the case with the Lisbon Treaty.
Newropeans is the first trans-European Political party participating in the European elections. Newropeans is a reform party with a 10/15 year focus and wants to strengthen European democracy.
